PDEoeste Propagation and Cultivation

The ecological restoration of the Western Waste Rock Pile (PDE Oeste), in the Carajás Mountains, is being carried out through the reconstruction of ecosystems functionally equivalent to ferruginous canga ecosystems, with an emphasis on the conservation and reintroduction of native and endangered plant species. Actions focus on supporting the revegetation processes of PDE Oeste, including the development of technical protocols for the collection, processing, storage, and production of seedlings of native canga species; the establishment of a germplasm bank for endangered species, such as Ipomoea cavalcantei, including strategies to maximize genetic diversity and monitor the demographic dynamics of reintroduced populations; the propagation and cultivation of native grasses, with a focus on seed production for annual species and tiller production for perennial species; and scaling up the production of biomats with grasses and/or associated species. These actions aim to strengthen ecological restoration practices in Vale’s operations in Carajás.
