This group conducts research, applies, and proposes concepts and technologies aimed at automating, optimizing, and integrating mining processes from geology and mining to mineral processing and logistics. Typical outputs in this area include vehicles, equipment, instruments, and robots that operate autonomously, via remote control, in assisted mode, or with automation levels that meet the requirements of an intelligent and optimized process chain.

Gustavo Pessin
PhD in Computer Science and Computational Mathematics
Gustavo Pessin holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of São Paulo (USP), with a sandwich period at Heriot-Watt University (UK) and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He has worked in various research laboratories in Brazil, the UK, and Switzerland, focusing on mobile robotics and intelligent systems. Luciano Perdigão Cota holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), with a postdoctoral fellowship in optimization at ITV MI. He is an adjunct researcher at ITV, working in the area of optimization applied to mining and industry. He is a permanent professor in the following graduate programs:
Specialization in Process Automation; Specialization in Mining; PROFICAM Master’s Degree (ITV/UFOP); PPGTIM Master’s Degree (ITV/Unifesspa); Master’s and PhD programs in PPGCC (UFOP).
He advises master’s and doctoral students, contributing directly to academic and scientific training in various fields of engineering and mining.
He has experience in metaheuristics, mixed-integer linear programming, simheuristics, routing, sequencing, blending, and mining problems, as well as other industrial applications. He is a member of the Brazilian Operations Research Society (SOBRAPO), the GOAL group (UFOP), and a collaborator in the Production Engineering and Computational Intelligence group at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC).

He is a PhD candidate in Mechanical Engineering at the São Carlos School of Engineering at the University of São Paulo (USP), where he develops mechatronic projects for robotic devices. He holds a master’s degree in Instrumentation, Control, and Automation of Mining Processes from the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP), and a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the same university. He also holds an MBA in Project Management from the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (Esalq/USP).

PhD in Chemical Engineering
Iranildes Daniel dos Santos holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from COPPE, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and a master’s degree from the same institution, both focused on flotation and electrochemistry. She earned her undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS) and completed postdoctoral research at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) in bioflotation, and at COPPE/UFRJ in electrometallurgy and effluent treatment.
Since 2013, she has worked as a researcher at ITV MI, developing projects in hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, electrochemistry, and effluent treatment applied to the mining of base and ferrous metals. She is a collaborating professor in the PROFICAM master’s degree (UFOP/ITV) and coordinator of the Specialization course in Mineral Processing at ITV. She also co-supervises master’s and doctoral students in the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Program at COPPE/UFRJ, in partnership with Prof. Dr. Achilles Dutra.
